Being Liberal and a Progressive in a RED STATE is not an easy thing these days. I started this blog to vent my frustrations on our lives being taken over by right wing conservatives with their propaganda machines. I have also learned an important lesson in the last year, it is that reading is the only way to get real information, you cannot depend on the news you see on TV.

Is That His Hand or What?

The Truro Power Centre's 12-metre statue of Glooscap, legendary symbol of the Mi'kmaq, will soon lose an unwanted illusory protrusion.

Some motorists travelling Highway 104 toward Truro claim the statue looks like it has an appendage not intended by its sculptor emerging from its midriff.

Ribald humour and giggling 10-year-olds aside, the illusion is being taken seriously.

"We may have to take the arm off and get it bent up a little bit more and get his fingers on a staff with an eagle on the end of it, to take that illusion away," said Lawrence Paul, chief of Millbrook First Nation.

The chief said Monday that Atlantex Creative Works in Chezzetcook will make a staff to put in the statue's hand, thereby eliminating any illusion

God or Drugs -- The Ashley Smith Story

Now we know that along with reading one paragraph from The Purpose Driven Life, Ashley Smith gave Crystal Meth to her captor Brian Nichols. Now one has to wonder did Ashley know Brian before this all began?. Is is more than a Coincidence that Ashley just happened to be going out for a pack of cigarette at 2 A.M. when Nichols just happened to be in her neighborhood? I have no idea, but now it seems more than a probability that perhaps they knew each other to begin with. WHAT IS THE TRUE STORY?

Sheehan Arrested During Anti-War Protest

Rita Storm Update

My son who lives in the Houston Area suburps of Seabrook Tx returned home yesterday. It took a total of 8 hours of driving to go 140 miles. After 40 miles, one of their cars broke down and they towed it with jumper cables. They could find no stores open or any gas. When they were within 40 of home both jumper cables broke and they had a fourth of tank of gas. They left the broken down car and made it home, the last leg on fumes. The good news is their area was virtually undamaged and they had electricity. I am glad they are all safe.

Pat Tillman -- Still a Hero to the Right?

In an article on the former NFL player Pat Tillman who gave it all up to join the military after 9/11 to fight for his country, some new information is slowing emerging about this hero killed by friendly fire. It appears that Tillman disliked Bush, often read Norm Chomsky and told fellow soldiers they should vote for Kerry:

.....Interviews also show a side of Pat Tillman not widely known — a fiercely independent thinker who enlisted, fought and died in service to his country yet was critical of President Bush and opposed the war in Iraq, where he served a tour of duty. He was an avid reader whose interests ranged from history books on World War II and Winston Churchill to works of leftist Noam Chomsky, a favorite author......

.....Mary Tillman said a friend of Pat’s even arranged a private meeting with Chomsky, the antiwar author, to take place after his return from Afghanistan — a meeting prevented by his death. She said that although he supported the Afghan war, believing it justified by the Sept. 11 attacks, “Pat was very critical of the whole Iraq war.”

Baer, who served with Tillman for more than a year in Iraq and Afghanistan, told one anecdote that took place during the March 2003 invasion as the Rangers moved up through southern Iraq.

“I can see it like a movie screen,” Baer said. “We were outside of (a city in southern Iraq) watching as bombs were dropping on the town. We were at an old air base, me, Kevin and Pat, we weren’t in the fight right then. We were talking. And Pat said, ‘You know, this war is so f— illegal.’ And we all said, ‘Yeah.’ That’s who he was. He totally was against Bush......”

Reflections on The Anti War Protests

I see they are saying between 100,000 and 150,000 thousand people marched in the big anti war rally in Washington DC on Saturday. I watched some of the speeches on C-SPAN, there were some really wack-o people there.

The organizers of the rally are some of the most far lefties out there read David Corn's The odd and troubling origins of today’s anti-war movement

This was no accident, for the demonstration was essentially organized by the Workers World Party, a small political sect that years ago split from the Socialist Workers Party to support the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. The party advocates socialist revolution and abolishing private property. It is a fan of Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba, and it hails North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il for preserving his country’s “socialist system,” which, according to the party’s newspaper, has kept North Korea “from falling under the sway of the transnational banks and corporations that dictate to most of the world.” The WWP has campaigned against the war-crimes trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. editorial declared, “Iraq has done absolutely nothing wrong..........

If there is to be a serious anti-war movement, it needs to focus on one thing, that THIS WAR was not the right war. Even Cindy Sheehan (whom I admire very much) has gotten off message when she talks about Israel and says that going into Afghanistan was wrong. Most of the American people are not pacifists. We feel that when attacked we attack back. So sending a message of peace at all costs will not make a lot Americans sign on to the cause

I probably would have not taken part in this rally, even though I am very, very against this war. Too many messages being sent, not enough focus on the original intent.

New Orleans Flooding Again

Hurricane Rita's steady rains sent water pouring through breaches in a patched levee Friday, cascading into one of the city's lowest-lying neighborhoods in a devastating repeat of New Orleans' flooding nightmare.

Rita Causes New Flooding in New Orleans

100 Mile Gridlock

Heeding days of dire warnings about Hurricane Rita, as many as 2.5 million people jammed evacuation routes on Thursday, creating colossal 100-mile-long traffic jams that left many people stranded and out of gas as the huge storm bore down on the Texas coast.

Acknowledging that "being on the highway is a deathtrap," Mayor Bill White asked for military help in rushing scarce fuel to stranded drivers.

......Officials also made matters worse for themselves by announcing at one point that they would use inbound lanes on one highway to ease the outbound crush, only to abort the plan later, saying it was impractical......

There is No Global Warming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea right we all believe that now!

Four Years of Nothing

I think I would laugh if I didn't want to cry. We have had four years to plan for disasters since 9/11. I figured at least if nothing else this administration was planning for attacks and disasters in our largest cities. I now know that was a really stupid assumption. With traffic at a standstill in Houston it appears no city was prepared for a disaster whether manmade or natural. What have we done with all that planning and money? With people on the roads who are traveling at 1 MPH it sure makes my soul feel safer. This is another New Orleans shaping up with travelers unable to proceed to safety. We have a non-government government that cares not one twit about its own citizens.

It is each man for its own and no wonder anarchy prevailed in New Orleans!

Houston Evacuates Traffic at a Standstill

Traffic came to a standstill and gas shortages were reported Thursday as hundreds of thousands of people in the Houston metropolitan area rushed to get out of the path of Hurricane Rita, a monster storm with 165 mph winds.

An estimated 1.8 million residents or more in Texas and Louisiana were under orders to evacuate to avoid a deadly repeat of Katrina.

There is "no doubt in my mind that Gore won the election," the erstwhile President declared, saying the 2000 election process "failed abysmally."

He also snubbed the Supreme Court for getting involved, saying it was "highly partisan."

Really Scary Storm: RITA

How horrible another cat 5 hurricane, this time zooming in on Texas. My son who works at Johnson Space Center evacuated today. It took him almost 6 hours to go 140 miles north of Huston. He arrived there, thankfully, but can only camp out as all the hotel/motel rooms are already taken from Huston to Kansas City. Hopefully this storm will abate but who knows. If this devastates Huston and Galveston like they are predicting gas prices could soar to 5.00 a gallon. Who will be able to afford to live? Heating prices are predicted to triple and quadruple. What a mess.

We really needed to be spending 200 billion on Iraq when our own country is going down the tubes. I expect China to knock on the White House Door some day soon and say, "OK, give me the keys." We will all be wearing red cresents on our sleeves very soon.

Off the Wagon?

from The National Enquirer:

Faced with the biggest crisis of his political life, President Bush has hit the bottle again, The National Enquirer can reveal.

Bush, who said he quit drinking the morning after his 40th birthday, has started boozing amid the Katrina catastrophe.

Family sources have told how the 59-year-old president was caught by First Lady Laura downing a shot of booze at their family ranch in Crawford, Texas, when he learned of the hurricane disaster.

His worried wife yelled at him: "Stop, George."

Can Killer Storms Be Made?

Weird article in USA Today on how these storms are being made by a cold war device:

An Idaho weatherman says Japan's Yakuza mafia used a Russian-made electromagnetic generator to cause Hurricane Katrina in a bid to avenge itself for the Hiroshima atom bomb attack — and that this technology will soon be wielded again to hit another U.S. city.

Meteorologist Scott Stevens, a nine-year veteran of KPVI-TV in Pocatello, said he was struggling to forecast weather patterns starting in 1998 when he discovered the theory on the Internet. It's now detailed on Stevens' website,, the Idaho Falls Post Register reported.

Last week I closed my New York production office and sent my staff down to New Orleans to set up our own relief effort. I asked all of you to help me by sending food, materials and cash to the emergency relief center we helped set up on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with the Veterans for Peace. We did this when the government was doing nothing and the Red Cross was still trying to get it together. Every day, every minute was critical. People were dying, poor people, black people, left like so much trash in the street. I wanted to find a way to get aid in there immediately.

Our National Insecurity

Well this is pretty scary, the guy in charge doesn't know he's supposed to be in charge:

The federal official with the power to mobilize a massive federal response to Hurricane Katrina was Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, not the former FEMA chief who was relieved of his duties and resigned earlier this week, federal documents reviewed by Knight Ridder show.

Even before the storm struck the Gulf Coast, Chertoff could have ordered federal agencies into action without any request from state or local officials. Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown had only limited authority to do so until about 36 hours after the storm hit, when Chertoff designated him as the "principal federal official" in charge of the storm.

.....But Chertoff - not Brown - was in charge of managing the national response to a catastrophic disaster, according to the National Response Plan, the federal government's blueprint for how agencies will handle major natural disasters or terrorist incidents. An order issued by President Bush in 2003 also assigned that responsibility to the homeland security director.

But according to a memo obtained by Knight Ridder, Chertoff didn't shift that power to Brown until late afternoon or evening on Aug. 30, about 36 hours after Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi. That same memo suggests that Chertoff may have been confused about his lead role in disaster response and that of his department......

Cover-up: toxic waters 'will make New Orleans unsafe for a decade'

Toxic chemicals in the New Orleans flood waters will make the city unsafe for full human habitation for a decade, a US government official has told The Independent on Sunday. And, he added, the Bush administration is covering up the danger.

My Dying Wish

Is that if I am a patience under these circumstances I will be taken care by this kind of doctor:

Doctors working in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans killed critically ill patients rather than leaving them to die in agony as they evacuated hospitals, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

With gangs of rapists and looters rampaging through wards in the flooded city, senior doctors took the harrowing decision to give massive overdoses of morphine to those they believed could not make it out alive.

In an extraordinary interview with The Mail on Sunday, one New Orleans doctor told how she 'prayed for God to have mercy on her soul' after she ignored every tenet of medical ethics and ended the lives of patients she had earlier fought to save.

Image? or Help the Victims

How sad, who else but this administration would not make the right choice:

There's an intense damage-control debate at the White House over whether President Bush should name a Katrina relief czar, and the idea's backers are pushing former mayor Rudy Giuliani as a dream candidate.

But some top Bush aides think a brand-name disaster boss like Giuliani, dubbed "America's Mayor" for his leadership after 9/11, or former secretary of state Colin Powell would remind Americans of the administration's sluggish initial response to the hurricane.

"You don't want someone overshadowing the President," said an official in the "ride it out" camp. "That leaves him looking weak."

Although there was no official comment from the Moore camp, MSNBC noted the filmmaker has been a vocal critic of government culpability on his Web site.

You are No FDR Bush

An idiot, he could have provided a living wage for people displaced by this disastor instead he does this:

President Bush issued an executive order Thursday allowing federal contractors rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to pay below the prevailing wage.

In a notice to Congress, Bush said the hurricane had caused "a national emergency" that permits him to take such action under the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act in ravaged areas of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Bush's action came as the federal government moved to provide billions of dollars in aid, and drew rebukes from two of organized labor's biggest friends in Congress, Rep. George Miller of California and Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, both Democrats.

"The administration is using the devastation of Hurricane Katrina to cut the wages of people desperately trying to rebuild their lives and their communities," Miller said.

While the King of the world plays Cover his A** it is looking more and more like they are getting their talking points out there to a public who only tunes in for about 5 minutes a day and will in the end no doubt believe their bull****.

This is really scary though; several people are reporting a press black out now in NO, here is a clip from NBC's Brian Williams:

"At that same fire scene, a police officer from out of town raised the muzzle of her weapon and aimed it at members of the media... obvious members of the media... armed only with notepads. ... Someone else points out on television as I post this: the fact that the National Guard now bars entry (by journalists) to the very places where people last week were barred from LEAVING (The Convention Center and Superdome) is a kind of perverse and perfectly backward postscript to this awful chapter in American history.""

Brain Blow Out

From MSNBC Katrina Blog:

BOGALUSA, La. – Before we leave Bogalusa, an update on how FEMA is dealing with hurricane refugees at Red Cross shelters.

As noted here two days ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s decision to ask evacuees to call (800) 621-3362 or browse to to start the process of filing a claim for disaster assistance was greeted with disbelief by most relief workers we talked to, who noted that most of these people don’t have ready access to telephones.

It turns out, according to a Red Cross worker here, the response is even a bigger Catch-22 than I realized.

It turns out, according to the worker, who like the other aid workers spoke on condition of anonymity, that the call to the FEMA number does not open a claim; it results in a package containing the claim form being mailed to the address of the evacuee.

Since the evacuee is in a shelter, mail service has been suspended in many of the hardest hit areas and some of the homes are likely still under water, it seems clear that those claim forms won’t be mailed back any time soon.

What is FEMA Thinking?

It Boggles the Mind

A South Carolina health official said his colleagues scrambled Tuesday when FEMA gave only a half-hour notice to prepare for the arrival of a plane carrying as many as 180 evacuees to Charleston.

The Two Americas ~~ A Really True Reality!

It is pretty clear now that presidential hopeful John Edward's Two Americas was a fact, laughed at by some Americans who have never experienced class warfare.

I voted for this man in the primaries in my state. I knew exactly what he was talking about. But it must be hard to imagine by some like George W who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Maybe now some Americans will see what this means by looking at the faces of those that were left behind in New Orleans. The poorest of the poor, who couldn't even begin to be able to evacuate themselves and their families from an immient disaster, BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO POOR!

Hopefully this will be a turning point for most Americans to see that a country as rich as we have THAT needs to help its poorest and weakest. If not I believe we are doomed.

It is time for American to wake up. We cannot sustain a society that only gives back to the richest of the rich while doing nothing for the poorest of the poor.

What We Could Have Had

President Al Gore (I wish) from Suburban Guerilla:

About 140 people – mostly elderly and infirm – arrived Saturday at McGhee Tyson Airport on a chartered mercy flight from hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, welcomed to East Tennessee by a bright sun and a host of medical professionals straining at the reins to help their fellow human beings without regard to whether they were on the clock.

The displaced hurricane victims came to Tennessee on a hastily arranged flight, accompanied by doctors and carrying whatever they had in boxes, bags or, in one case, an old suitcase tied up with rope.

Former Vice President Al Gore arranged the flight and was on board, but he declined to take credit for the airlift, fearing it would be “politicized.”

Labor Day Holiday Has become a JOKE!

What a joke the labor Day Holiday has become. The majority of the American People has been so propaganized to that they have no idea what Unions in America accomplished for the worker. The 40 hour work week, breaks, lunch hours, livable wages, overtime pay, safe working environments.

And the sad fact is that the non-union employee has no idea that they have these benefits only because of the union.

WAKE-UP America, we are going back to the 19th century, overtime pay has been cut for most of America by this administration, union busting began back in the 1980's with the Reagan administration, and continues today. The worker is the one who made this country what is is today. But it is the CEO that makes 1000 times the wage of worker. There would be no America if not for all of us poor Americans in the labor force.

What WE NEED; The New WPA , CCC Camps and The "New" New Deal

There are going be hundreds of thousands of people needed to rebuild the gulf coast and New Orleans, we need a "new" New Deal program likd FDR's WPA and CCC camps. Use the people who are displaced with no jobs to rebuild the south. This would give them steady work to rebuild their lives, the top priority should be to give anyone displaced by the hurricane the first bid to jobs in rebuilding their own communities..

And how to pay for this:
Repeal the tax cuts for the richest Americans,

Put the chapter 7 bankruptcy back in place

Do not pass the bill that would do away with the estate tax

I think it is very clear now that we cannot live in a capitalist society without some socialism (as stated by Alan Greenspan) "
The income gap between the rich and the rest of the US population has become so wide, and is growing so fast, that it might eventually threaten the stability of democratic capitalism itself.)

Louisiana National Guard Wanted Equipment Home

August 1, 2005, 9:07 PM CDT

When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.

"The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission," said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard.

Press Release from Senator Mary Landrieu:

“But perhaps the greatest disappointment stands at the breached 17th Street levee. Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a Presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. The good and decent people of southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast – black and white, rich and poor, young and old – deserve far better from their national government.

From AmericaBlog (Thanks Melissa):

From the Times-Picayune (the story was on a breaking news page, it's now moved off, so I'm taking down the link, but it's for real, I copied it off the newspaper's web site)

Bush visit halts food delivery

Three tons of food ready for delivery by air to refugees in St. Bernard Parish and on Algiers Point sat on the Crescent City Connection bridge Friday afternoon as air traffic was halted because of President Bush’s visit to New Orleans, officials said.

The provisions, secured by U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, and state Agriculture Commissioner Bob Odom, baked in the afternoon sun as Bush surveyed damage across southeast Louisiana five days after Katrina made landfall as a Category 4 storm, said Melancon’s chief of staff, Casey O’Shea.

“We had arrangements to airlift food by helicopter to these folks, and now the food is sitting in trucks because they won’t let helicopters fly,” O’Shea said Friday afternoon.

The food was expected to be in the hands of storm survivors after the president left the devastated region Friday night, he said.

New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

---Rev. Bill Shanks, pastor of New Covenant Fellowship of New Orleans

Quote of the Day

"I don't want to see anybody do anymore more goddamn press conferences. Put a moratorium on press conferences. Don't do another press conference until the resources are in this city."

--Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans

And the World Watches

The world has watched amazed as the planet's only superpower struggles with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with some saying the chaos has exposed flaws and deep divisions in American society.

"Anarchy in the USA" declared Britain's best-selling newspaper The Sun.

"Apocalypse Now" headlined Germany's Handelsblatt daily.

Picking Your Priorities -- Well Hey It's Football

It is Pretty Clear They Were Not Here -- BRING THEM HOME

OK People its pretty clear now that the one thing we depended on to help us in disasterous times were not here. The National Guard, the one thing we could always depend on in times like this. If there were enough guard in New Orleans they would have been there within hours like always. They were not there, they were in Iraq. Bush has doomed us to natural Castastrophy!, we do not have enough National Guard in our states to save us. Bring them home Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It Breaks Your Heart

We saw mothers holding babies, some of them just three, four and five months old, living in horrible conditions. Diapers littered the ground. Feces were on the ground. Sewage was spilled all around.

These people are being forced to live like animals. When you look at the mothers, your heart just breaks.

The 'REAL' Looting

Condi Shops While Babies Die

From Gawker:

According to Drudge, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has recently enjoyed a little Broadway entertainment. And Page Six reports that she’s also working on her backhand with Monica Seles. So the Gulf Coast has gone all Mad Max, women are being raped in the Superdome, and Rice is enjoying a brief vacation in New York. We wish we were surprised.

What does surprise us: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice’s timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, “How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!” Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.

When the levee breaks

From Attytood:

It appears that the money has been moved in the president’s budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that’s the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can’t be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us.

-- Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; New Orleans Times-Picayune, June 8, 2004.

"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."

George W. Bush, President of the United States, September 1, 2005

Zero Tolerance

A--Hole Scott McClellan was just asked if people who took food or water or shoes to walk through the debris would be considered looters, he said there would be zero tolerance for any people who stole things.

That is not stealing you jerk that is surviving, it's been 4 days you weird-o these people are hungry and thirsty their babies are dying. We should tie him up and make him go 4 days without water.

You make me sick.

Bush should resign, he is the worse president we ever had.

Where is Rudy Guliani?

Well I guess we all know now what would happen if we were attacked again! It would be utter chaos. We need Rudy Guliani. Who is going to fix this mess in New Orleans? It was announced Bush would be in NO on Saturday, what a joke, he would be killed.

I thought this homeland security had been planning for years how to handle a castastrophe, holding pretend disasters and video games. This is the real thing, what happened?

I know I sure feel better now about the safety of America

Just Horrible

Watching the scenes from New Orleans on MSNBC. What is wrong with our government, get these people some water. Drop it in from airplanes. This is America, not Indonesia or some third world country. Where is the help. This is just sick, help these people.
