Quote of the Day
"It was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship." -- George W. Bush, 6/29 (Whitehouse.gov).
Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love
From Hotline on Call :
Pool Report Paragraph of the Morning
"Koizumi came in on a separate helicopter and pulled into place. The president began walking toward the chopper at 8:57, giving a hearty wave. FLOTUS stayed put. When Koizumi, in a styling bluish-grey suit and no tie came down the stairs, Bush greeted him with a handshake and a hand on the back. The two strode side by side, a Burning Love between them, across the tarmac (which was remarkable, given that just 60 years ago, their fathers had been at war, and now, through the power of freedom and democracy, their boys were going to pay tribute to a drug-addled sex addict who died on the toilet)." -- Joseph Curl
Decider Gets Checked at Last
From Eugene Robinson, Washington Post :
Finally.
It seemed almost too much to hope for, but the Supreme Court finally called George W. Bush onto the carpet yesterday and asked him the obvious question: What part of "rule of law" do you not understand?

Chickenhawks
This is a real pet-peeve of mine, when chickenhawks talk about liberal military guys, it makes me want to up-chuck:
The Court thus properly rejected Justice Thomas’s extraordinary idea that the “structural advantages attendant to the Executive Branch” in war-time—aspects of executive power that make that branch the “most dangerous” to individual liberty today—merit a hands-off approach by the courts. (Ironically, Justice Thomas refers to Justice Stevens’ “unfamiliarity with the realities of warfare”; but Stevens served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. Thomas’s official bio, by contrast, contains no experience of military service.

Ker--Pow .... Did Bush Get Punched by SCOTUS
According to Andrew Sullivan the Supreme Court decision was a body blow to Bush:
The more you read, the more you see what a body-blow this is to our quasi-monarchical president. The ruling clearly states that the interrogation methods currently authorized by Rumsfeld and the CIA are unlawful. There's also a warning against the over-broad executive interpretation of Congress's Authorization for the Use of Military Force - which implicates the NSA program. Big news, methinks. The Founders have not been disproved. This constitutional system works, even in wartime, and even under an administration with demonstrable contempt for the rule of law.
The Court Versus Bush
It's Called....."Shooting Yourself in the Foot"
From Political Wire:
.......Although the Supreme Court's decision is a big victory for Republicans, and specifically for former Senate Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas, who engineered the redistricting, redistricting by other states may have the GOP ruing the day."
"New maps may well put more Democrats in the House of Representatives, possibly enough to tip the balance of power from Republicans to Democrats. We expect Illinois, New Mexico, New Jersey and New York to wind up with Democrats in control of both the governor's mansion and the state legislature after the November elections. So redistricting in those states might shift enough seats to the Democratic column to give that party a majority.........."
Help Claire Win
George Bush raked in one million dollars last night for Jim Talent while at a fundraiser in St. Louis.
Help us take back the Senate, give a little to Claire McCaskill
Guess who the dissenters were
It was a 5-3 decision with Scalia, Alito and Thomas dissenting, with Roberts sitting out because he ruled in this case when it was previously heard by the D.C. Circuit.
King George vs. The Supreme Court
Now that the Supreme Court has ruled against Bush I guess we will find out just how far he thinks he can go toward becoming a dictator. With all his so-called signing statements that makes it possible to by pass any laws he wishes will he just pass this off as another law he can break because he is king?
CNN Breaking.....Bush Overstepped Rules

On Jack Cafferty
This is a good article on CNN's Jack Cafferty. When he was on the CNN morning show I had always figured he was conservative. Good quote from the article:
"I tend to be independent. I went from cheering George Bush on to thinking he's one of the great failures to ever occupy the White House," Cafferty said.

Way to go Claire! She is coming up on Hardball right now. Get your face out there. I have never seen Talent on anything!
Hyping the Miami 7
Jon Stewart's take on the "terror cell" in Miami. By the way I saw an interview of a sister of one of the guys they arrested who was supposedly called Brother Sunni, she said his nickname was Sunny, because he had a happy disposition and had been called that from the time he was a small child. She also said he was Catholic:
Supreme Court and Texas Redistricting
Well the dems won a small victory here at least:
The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld most of the Texas congressional map engineered by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay but threw out part, saying some of the new boundaries failed to protect minority voting rights.
The fractured decision was a small victory for Democratic and minority groups who accused Republicans of an unconstitutional power grab in drawing boundaries that booted four Democratic incumbents out of office.
Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority, said Hispanics don't have a chance to elect a candidate of their choosing under the plan.

Those Manly,Macho, Masculine, Virile Wingnuts
Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh was detained for more than three hours Monday at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida.
Authorities say they found a bottle of Viagra in his possession without a prescription. A sheriff's office spokesman says it didn't have Limbaugh's name on it, but that of two doctors.Limbaugh attorney Roy Black says a doctor had prescribed the drug, but he says, it was "labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes."Limbaugh detained at Palm Beach airport

More Good News for Claire
According to Hotline on Call:
62% of Show-Me Staters would like to be shown the benefits of gov't-funded stem cell research, according to the latest Research 2000 poll, conducted for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. And that number is good news for Aud. Claire McCaskill (D), a supporter of the measure, in her bid to replace Sen. Jim Talent (R), who opposes it.
McCaskill leads Talent 49%-43% in the survey, and she may be helped by ballot measures that boost turnout among Dems and indies more likely to cast their ballot her way. Alongside the stem cell initiative -- which, by the way, garners support from 64% of indies and 40% of GOPers -- a ballot initiative that would raise the minimum wage to $6.50 an hour boasts a giant 66%-21% lead, with the support of 71% of indie voters.
Claire Beating Talent in New Poll
Boy this is very good news:
A Research 2000 poll, conducted for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV in St. Louis, gives Democrat challenger Claire McCaskill a slight edge over Republican incumbent Senator Jim Talent if the election were held today. The survey, conducted among 800 likely voters last week, indicates 49 percent of those surveyed expressed support for McCaskill, while 43 percent favored Talent. 8 percent were undecided.

They Like Us, they really Like Us part II
From Newsweek's Richard Wolffe:
But it’s not just the American president feeling the brunt of unpopularity here in Vienna. When a group of reporters attempted to hail a cab outside the Hilton Vienna hotel (where the White House press corps is staying) on Tuesday night, one driver waved the group off with a string of anti-American expletives. Calling Bush a modern-day “Hitler,” the driver told the reporters they were “nasty Americans” and said he wouldn’t permit them to step foot into his car.
Dems Fighting Back
From Hotline on Call:
Breaking News: Dems Refuse To Be Defined By Republicans On Iraq
No Plan, No End, Same Slogan
There they go again. On the Senate floor, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison just offered a slogan – “cut and run” -- instead of a solution. It’s time to call Republicans on their games. Today, the Senate Democratic Communications Center will shine the light on Republican rubberstamping. Americans have had enough of Bush Republicans’ no plan, no end. We need to hear more than Senator Hutchinson saying, “I urge my colleagues to think of the consequences of cutting and running from a fight that is much bigger than the stabilization of Iraq.” With the proposal put forward by Senators Levin and Reed, Democrats offer a plan for the Iraqis to take greater responsibility for their own security and future.
Where’s their plan?
Quote of the Day

Just watch and see why:
Hey Soon I Can Join Up!
They are just taking them older and older it seems:
The U.S. Army, aiming to make its recruiting goals amid the Iraq war, raised its maximum enlistment age by another two years on Wednesday, while the Army Reserve predicted it will miss its recruiting target for a second straight year.
People can now volunteer to serve in the active-duty Army or the part-time Army Reserve and National Guard up to their 42nd birthday
.....It marked the second time this year the Army has boosted the maximum age for new volunteers, raising the ceiling from age 35 to 40 in January.....

Ass-Holes
The Republican-controlled Senate refused Wednesday to raise the minimum wage, rejecting an election-year proposal from Democrats for the first increase in nearly a decade.
I don't think the Republicans get it," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy , D-Mass., who backed a proposal for a three-step increase in the current wage floor to $7.25 an hour. The federal minimum wage has been fixed at $5.15 an hour since 1997.

No Pity or conscience
Wingnut Powerline smears the family of the young soldier whose body was found this morning, in his post Bodies of Kidnapped Soldiers Reportedly Found he disgustingly opines:
In a sick coda, Menchaca's uncle, Ken MacKenzie, appeared on the Today show and recited weirdly inapplicable Democratic Party talking points in relation to his own nephew's death...no shame
You are the one with no shame, this family just lost their loved one, you are sick and disgusting!

We Should All Support Companies Like This
June is Gay Pride Month (American Airlines Employee's Website)
American Airlines - "JetNet" ^ | Tuesday, June 13, 2006 | American Airlines
June is Gay Pride Month
June is recognized as Pride month for American and American Eagle's gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered (GLBT) employees.
The multi-colored Rainbow Flag, a symbol of GLBT pride, will be displayed in the atrium at HDQ1, HDQ2 and FSU. The flag, designed by Gilbert Baker, debuted at the 1978 San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day parade. It is comprised of six colors, representing life, healing, sun, nature, harmony and spirit. It represents the diversity and the unity of GLBT persons everywhere.
SO told me about the American Airlines Gay Pride Thing and I was searching google when I came across the above posting that was cut and pasted from Jetnet (only employees can see) on Free Republic a crazy far right blog, here are some of the wingnut comments about it:
Ugh. We need a gay revulsion month.
Well, that settles it for me....I won't be flying on a sex-deviate-supportive airline like American and American Eagle, and have told them so. Until the end of the extortion (threat of legal action against them) from companies with no backbone or principles occurs, I'll take my business elsewhere.
o: LibWhacker
.....Indeed....! I simply cannot understand the "pride" associated with what are basically un-natural and disgusting sexual activities....! but, again.... another sign of the sick times in which we live....Lord help anyone who might want to start a "Straight Pride" month...they would be branded as "homophobic" or something....!!
The New Face of the Republican Party
I wasn't going to mention this because the more talk about her the more booksales she gets but I think this time Miss Foulmouth Coulter went way overboard with her remarks about the 9/11 widows. I think the best thing dems could do is place this face as the face of the Republican Party:
The party that spews hate and vitriol. Let them try and defend that!
Its a Number -- 2500
Tell that to their families:
QUESTION:
Tony, American deaths in Iraq have reached 2,500. Is there any response or reaction from the President on that?
SNOW:
It's a number. And every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks, people want something.

Slimey The Slimeball
Karl Rove on John Kerry and John Murtha's Military service:
"They may be with you for the first few bullets but they won't be there for the last tough battles."
According to Senate Majority Report:
"Except for a lapse of several months, Selective Service records show presidential adviser Karl Rove escaped the draft for nearly three years at the height of the Vietnam War using student deferments. " [Walsh, Salt Lake Tribune, 9/18/2004]
Rove's (non-)draft history includes a period where he claimed a student deferment even though he had dropped out of school.
Thank You NRA
This is pretty sad and I'd like to thank the NRA for it:
A report released today by the Children's Defense Fund (CDF,) and based upon data collected by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) finds that more children and teens died as a result of gun violence in 2003 than American fighting men and women killed in hostile action in the first three years of the Iraq war combined.
More kids killed by guns in US in single year than total Iraq war casualties

"I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel I owe anybody an explanation,

An Open Letter to Red State Senators
This week I watched the Senate debate what was called by some the most important issue facing Americans today, amending our Constitution so gays will never be able to marry.
As I sit here listening to you opine about “traditional family values” and the importance of keeping marriage between a man and woman I had to wonder where you stand on divorce, infant mortality rate, education, and teen pregnancy? Is your mind so narrow that you would place gay marriage above all those? I think maybe you should clean up your own front yards before you go worrying about what some blue states may be doing.

Get Your Bets in Now
With Bush starting back up with "WEDGE" issues again ie Gay Marriage amendment, to get the social conservatives out to the polls in November, how long before we start getting terror alerts again? Has anyone but me noticed that nada since the election of 2004.
My bet they will start again a couple of months before November. And everyone will wet their pants again instead of thinking that the Bush bunch are using them as a political issue.
When do you think the first alert will be?

Family Values Wingnuts
I just love these "family Values" wingnuts like Rush Limbaugh, divorced three times and a drug addict or Newt Gingrich who had an affair while his wife was undergoing chemo. Here is another:

Bobby Kennedy Jr. -- Republicans Stole The Election of 2004
I've always believed this, and have never thought that GWB was our real president either in 2000 or 2004

Republicans prevented more than 350,000 voters in Ohio from casting ballots or having their votes counted -- enough to have put John Kerry in the White House.
