And now, as predicted back when this whole mess was brewing, Turkey threatens to invade Iraq.

Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they are prepared to send the army into northern Iraq if U.S. and Iraqi forces do not take steps to combat Turkish Kurdish guerrillas there _ a move that could put Turkey on a collision course with the United States.

Turkey is facing increasing domestic pressure to act after 15 soldiers, police and guards were killed fighting the guerrillas in southeastern Turkey in the past week.

Why does anyone still give credence to the neocon jokers who helped create this mess?

Bush Attacks Merkel

I really believe this man is losing it. After watching him talk while chewing with his mouth open yesterday, now this:

according to Think Progess: Bush rubbed the German Chancellor Angela Merkel the wrong way at the G8 summit. The Los Angeles Times reports, “Bush headed directly behind the chancellor, reached out and, placing both hands on the collar of her gold jacket, gave her a short massage just below the neck. She smiled.” Yet, according to the video evidence, it’s pretty clear the chancellor wanted nothing to do with the massage.

Keith Olbermann had a clip on his show last night where a young soldier raises serious concerns about old equipment his unit has to use while looking for IEDs and Rumsfeld makes it into a joke and actually laughs about it. The only place I could find any other reporting on this incident was in an op-ed piece:

When a soldier spoiled Rumseld's carefully-scripted Iraq "town meeting" by daring to ask why his unit couldn't get the new armored Humvees when New York City seems to have no trouble obtaining such vehicles, Rummy tried to turn it into a joke. Yeah, Americans dying in Iraq while the Secretary of Defense jokes about it. That's really funny. Who hired these clowns?

I hope that young soldiers Mom and Dad and wife gets to see just how much this administration cares about our troops. Support them by making fun of their safety concerns.

The American flag stands for the fact that cloth can be very important. It is against the law to let the flag touch the ground or to leave the flag flying when the weather is bad. The flag has to be treated with respect. You can tell just how important this cloth is because when you compare it to people, it gets much better treatment. Nobody cares if a homeless person touches the ground. A homeless person can lie all over the ground all night long without anyone picking him up, folding him neatly and sheltering him from the rain. School children have to pledge loyalty to this piece of cloth every morning. No one has to pledge loyalty to justice and equality and human decency. No one has to promise that people will get a fair wage, or enough food to eat, or affordable medicine, or clean water, or air free of harmful chemicals. But we all have to promise to love a rectangle of red, white, and blue cloth. Betsy Ross would be quite surprised to see how successful her creation has become. But Thomas Jefferson would be disappointed to see how little of the flag's real meaning remains. Charlotte Aldebron, 12, wrote this essay for a competition in her 6th grade English class. It looks like the military needs recruits so much it is allowing people like Timothy McVeigh to join up again:

A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" to infiltrate the military, according to a watchdog organization.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and right-wing militia groups, estimated that the numbers could run into the thousands, citing interviews with Defense Department investigators and reports and postings on racist Web sites and magazines.

"We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," the group quoted a Defense Department investigator as saying in a report to be posted today on its Web site, www.splcenter.org. "That's a problem."
