Moving Backward
Didn't we have this fight along time ago and evolution won, this is like Deja vu:
A six-day courtroom-style debate opened on Thursday in Kansas over what children should be taught in schools about the origin of life -- was it natural evolution or did God create the world?
The hearings, complete with opposing attorneys and a long list of witnesses, were arranged amid efforts by some Christian groups in Kansas and nationally to reverse the domination of evolutionary theory in the nation's schools

The problem is they want to teach it in "science" class. You cannot teach something which is based in faith not fact in science. If they want to teach a course on the world's religions, that would be fine by me. "Creationists" believe the world is only 6,000 years old and that dinosaurs walked along side
Adam and Eve and that the world was literally created in 7 days. That is like telling kids fairy tales are true. We know through testing when man appeared and what he looked like and how he evolved to the point of what we look like today. Those are all facts. If people want their kids to think that the teachings of the Bible should be taken as the literal truth, no biggie to me, but that can be accomplished in the home and church. In school only facts should be taught.

Actually Ginger. That is NOT what Creationists believe. On the other hand, teaching evoultion as anything more than a theory is wrong also. You say only "facts" should be taught, however, the whole "Theory of Evolution" is just that, a THEORY, it has NOT been proven. Evolution, within a species is, of course proven by fossils and other research, the problem comes when you want to start teaching INTER-special evolution, i.e. fish lives on land, becomes monkey, evolves into man.THAT, my dear is not proven fact, thus, it remains THEORY, which is exactly what you, yourself state should not be taught in schools.

I guess the confusion comes in when people associate the word "theory" with "Scientific Theory" which are very different. Scientific theory is an explanation of a set of related observations or events based upon proven hypotheses and verified multiple times by detached groups of researchers. One scientist cannot create a theory; he can only create a hypothesis.
Hardly anyone disputes the Theory of Gravity, Germ theory (the theory that all contagious diseases are caused by microorganisms), cell theory -( the theory that cells form the fundamental structural and functional units of all living organisms), and the hundreds of other theories that are the basis of all science.
I do understand where Lei is coming from though. In my youth, the Bible was so ingrained in my consciousness that to even think about something that would go against its teaching would land me in the fires of Hell for eternity. As I have aged and studied, I decided I could look at it by figuring each of the 7 days the world and life itself were created consisted of millions of years. Now I look at it from the same point as Christian scientists, that God caused evolution.
In any event Scientic Theories are fact unless falsified. And I don't know of anyone yet who has proven evolution false. On the other side of the coin "Intelligent Design" is a good example of non-scientific theory because there is no evidence to prove any hypotheses.
