More Shades of Orwell's 1984
In George Orwell's dreary classic '1984', the totalitarian state of Oceania is perpetually at war with either Eurasia or Eastasia. The enemy changes periodically, but the war is permanent; its true purpose is to control dissent and sustain dictatorship by nurturing popular fear and hatred.
Bush and his administration are showing the same governing principles of Oceania:
WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
......What's the popular expression? "Go along to get along"?
What an appalling notion. Shades of Orwell's "1984" -- the most frightening piece of literature I've ever read or taught. For those who haven't yet read it -- do it now. Read it with your children and grandchildren. Read about what happens to a society that exchanges thought and action for heat, food, and gadgets.....
